Chapter 2: Setting: the Cause of Rising Tensions
“Divergent Chapter 2: Setting: the Cause of Rising Tensions”
Could setting be a major cause for the Erudite’s attack on Abnegation? In Divergent, the locations of the factions and some important buildings affect what happens in the story.
The faction’s locations have a large impact on the most important event in Divergent. In the beginning of Divergent, tensions are rising between the Erudite and the Abnegation over beliefs. These tensions exist because the Erudite don’t want the Abnegation running the government. Instead, the Erudite want to be the faction running the government, or all of the factions to rule (33).
Location has a lot to do with these tensions, because the Abnegation don’t live near the Erudite. Jeanine Matthews, the leader of Erudite and her assistants begin to plan an attack on the Abnegation. They plan this with the Dauntless leaders, who unlike many of their faction members, don’t like having the Abnegation in power (319).
Faction Headquarters
For the attack to be successful, the Erudite need trained fighters that they can contact quickly. The Dauntless are skilled fighters, and their faction headquarters are right next to the Erudite headquarters. The Dauntless live Southeast from the heart of the city, close to the fence. The Erudite live in the Southwest as well, but far from the fence. Since their headquarters are so close, the Erudite are able to go to the Dauntless headquarters and spy on them. They spy on the Dauntless to see if they’re good soldiers. Also, the Erudite can easily have private meetings with the Dauntless leaders to discuss the attack, as is mentioned in Four by Veronica Roth, a Lastly, if the Dauntless or Erudite need to get to each other’s faction headquarters, it doesn’t take very long to get there.
The locations of the factions Amity and Candor isolate them from the other factions. The Candor live in the Northwest corner of the city, near the fence. The Amity live outside the city fence, near the Southwest corner. When it comes to plotting a war, isolation isn’t a good thing. The Candor and Amity aren’t able to see what the Dauntless and Erudite are doing. For example, they don’t see that the Erudite are rebelling. They are doing this by keeping their lights on at night. However, their lights are supposed to be off, to conserve resources Not being watched by the Candor or Amity gives the Dauntless and Erudite leaders more control. This is because nobody knows enough about their plans to stop them. The Amity and the Candor don’t hear about the war plans until many Abnegation have been killed.
Another vital location is the Abnegation headquarters. The Abnegation's place on the map really affects them, when it comes to the attack. They aren’t very close to the Erudite, since there are so many buildings in between their factions. Their small headquarters also makes them easier to attack, because there is less ground to guard. The Abnegation are far from the Dauntless, so they can’t see what the Dauntless are doing, or figure out that they’re going to be attacked soon. This unfortunately results in more casualties, because the Abnegation were never able to be warned about attack.
School: The Beginning of All Learning
Another important location is the school. The school is where you learn the basic things that you need to know, before you choose your faction. The school is in the center of the city, so it’s in a convenient place for every faction to get to. If the school wasn’t in the center of the city, it wouldn’t be convenient for some of the factions. That could cause the factions that are far from the school to homeschool their children. It’s important for the children associate with each other. This is so they can figure out which faction they belong in, by seeing the customs and behaviors of the other factions. They can also practice the behaviors that their faction values.
The Ferris Wheel: Tris Shows Her True Colors
Another important place is the old ferris wheel. The old ferris wheel’s location is an important factor in character development. If the ferris wheel hadn’t been where the Dauntless played capture the flag, Four wouldn’t have told Beatrice about his fear of heights, or hinted that he had a crush on her. Also, Beatrice wouldn’t get a chance to prove herself worthy to the Dauntless-born initiates. She does this by scaling the ferris wheel and finding the other team’s flag.
Ziplining Off Hancock
The Hancock Building is very important to Divergent. It is where Beatrice shows the Dauntless-born initiates that she really is a Dauntless by ziplining off of the tall building. Without having the Dauntless initiates as friends, it would be even harder for Beatrice to go through the aftermath of losing her parents, and some of her friends in the attack.
The Train Will Lead You There
Another vital thing to this book, is the train around the city. There are many reasons why it’s so critical, so I chose three reasons to mention. Jumping onto the train is Beatrice’s first task of Dauntless initiation. It is also the first task of initiation that she passes. Also, Beatrice rides the train to visit her brother, Caleb in the Erudire headquarters. If there wasn’t such a convenient way to get there, Tris might not have told Caleb to research the serums. Lastly, Beatrice rides the train to play capture the flag. On the train, Four chooses her to be on his team. Without the train, I wonder what kind of transportation that the Dauntless would use. How would they be showing bravery with that transportation, like they do with the train by jumping onto it?
The Isolation Fence
The last location that I will be mentioning is the fence that surrounds the city. This location is crucial to Divergent, as well as the other books in this series. Without the fence surrounding the city, Amity wouldn’t be so isolated from the other factions. They might’ve been able to stop Erudite’s attack on the Abnegation. Also, the fence keeps people from escaping the city to the mostly unknown outside.
So What?
The locations of the factions and other vital structures really have an impact on what happens in the story. If these locations were any different, the attack on the Abnegation wouldn’t have happened. The Erudite wouldn’t have spied on the Dauntless in the first place. There wouldn’t be the deaths of many Abnegation from the attack. If the school was in a different place, some factions may not attend it, drastically changing the way that the children are raised. If there wasn’t the train, how would some important character development happen? Without the Hancock building, how would Beatrice prove herself worthy to the Dauntless-born initiates? These locations have a direct affect on the plot or the character development.
Without these locations, this series would be very different. The locations affect what happens in the first book which has an affect on what happens in the second book, and so on. Without these locations, this series would be so different in many ways. The attack on the Abnegation wouldn’t have happened. The Erudite wouldn’t have used the Dauntless if they weren’t so close to each other. Amity and Candor would have stopped the attack if they weren’t so isolated. Also, without the school the children wouldn’t get the chance to interact with each other. Without interactions, they wouldn’t get chance of seeing the behaviors and customs of the other factions. Without the Hancock, Beatrice wouldn’t have a chance to prove herself worthy to the Dauntless-born initiates. Lastly, without the train around the city, there would have to be another way of transportation. The story would be different because the Dauntless would have to show that they are brave with another form of transportation. All of these changes would make Divergent a very different story. That is why these locations are so vital to the story as a whole, because it would be drastically changed without them.
